چکیده

Abstract Bitter taste perception has been studied in various species, including humans, using the synthetic compound phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). Human of PTC is linked to ability bitter foods. Sheep express varying levels aversion delivered drinking water. The objective this study was determine effects feed on dietary intake and behavior mature rams. We hypothesized that rams previously classified into PTC-taster categories PTC-spiked water would rank similarly when added feed. Mature Targhee, Rambouillet, Polypay, composite-breed rams, as either super- (n = 3), intermediate- 5), or non-PTC tasters 4), were subjected 4-d acclimation 6-d test phases. Alfalfa (70%), corn (15%), beat pulp (15%) meal mixed with ethanol (150 g/kg, fed) only (control) solubilized create three pelleted (6.3 mm) diets (110, 220 330 mg PTC/kg feed, fed). Rams received control (0.87% BW) daily for 30 min a side-by-side presentation, which replicated each concentration. Feeding duration, number bucket approaches switches, sniffs, drinks, lip smacks licks, head bobs, jerks, shakes recorded throughout trial video surveillance. For concentration, consumption similar (P 0.22) measured percentage total diet (control + PTC) consumed. Individual intakes ranged from 1.5 89.8% CV 110, mg/kg increased 22.4 34.1 36.1%, respectively. Residual Feed Intake and Feed Efficiency: Differences and Implications

In the beef production system, 70-75% of the total dietary energy is used for maintenance (Ferrell and Jenkins 1984; NRC 1996; Montaldo-Bermudez et al. 1990). Thus, while only 5% of the total life cycle dietary energy consumption is used for protein deposition in beef cattle, swine and poultry are more efficient at 14 and 22%, respectively. The relatively large size, slow maturity and slow repr...

CASE STUDY: Feed Intake and Performance of Heifers Sired by High- or Low-Residual Feed Intake

The objective of this project was to investigate the effects of selecting sires for residual feed intake (RFI) on the performance of their daughters. Bulls with low or high estimated breeding values (EBV) for RFI were selected from the Angus Society of Australia sire summary and mated to Angus cross commercial cows at the Kansas State University Cow-Calf Unit in 2005 and 2006. The average EBV o...

How important is feed intake?

Over the past 10 to 15 years there have been very significant changes in pig performance due to selection. The result has been an increase in maximum protein deposition, a shift in the distribution of energy towards more protein and less lipid deposition, an increase in maintenance requirements and a decrease in voluntary feed intake (Knap, 2000). Using national UK data, Walters (2000) estimate...

Evaluation of Columbia, USMARC-Composite, Suffolk, and Texel rams as terminal sires in an extensive rangeland production system: V. Postweaning growth, feed intake, and feed efficiency.

This study was conducted to quantify differences in feed efficiency among 4 sire breeds using records from 1,109 crossbred lambs over 3 yr. Lambs were produced from mating Columbia, USMARC-Composite (Composite), Suffolk, and Texel rams to adult Rambouillet ewes. After weaning, lambs were finished on a high-energy diet in group-fed pens. Efficiency was assessed at 45 and 90 d on study, 50 and 60...
